Currently on perspective at Roq la Rue Gallery in Seattle, Washington is artist Camille Rose Garcia’s solo exhibition, “Nereids of Mare Medusae.”

“I consider the human gatherings of the earlier couple of a long time has left me stargazing and ocean wandering as a survival technique. I cannot only make art about a dying globe, about a dying tradition, when there is nevertheless so significantly secret and awe inspiring magnificence to working experience all all around us. My enchantment with ocean and star themes is significantly influenced by my setting. I live 20 minutes from the Pacific Ocean in California, and all through the Pandemic I would consider weekly ocean hikes with my mother, who lives in a household overlooking the ocean that my grandfather developed.  It grew to become a supply of wonderful ease and comfort and solace  to be at the ocean selecting up shells and unusual parts of driftwood, and I puzzled about its ability to enchant and quiet people through difficult times.

For my solo present, “Nereids of Mare Medusae”, I was considering of the ocean and of the stars, and then, of study course, about oceans on other stars. I commenced to consider the oceans on other planets, as I remembered that Europa and Enceladus, (moons of Saturn and Jupiter) both have oceans inside the moon, surrounded by a thick crust of ice. I seemed to see if these oceans experienced names, but I could not obtain any. I decided to name the ocean within Enceladus, a single of Saturns’ moons. I named it Mare Medusae, not immediately after Medusa, but following the wonderful jellyfish drawings of Ernst Haeckel, who named the most attractive jellyfish he encountered immediately after his lifeless spouse Anna. The Nereids are Greek ocean spirits, but unlike the Sirens, they are benevolent in nature. The Nereids aren’t just rather to seem at however, they are occupied executing things in that ocean within that moon orbiting Saturn. Maybe they build magical devices and natural and organic equipment made of shells and serpents, producing a psychedelic universe with benevolent new music vibrations.” – Camille Rose Garcia
