Vancouver’s Granville avenue goes motor vehicle-totally free for art, audio-filled pedestrian promenade
A stretch of Granville Street in Vancouver’s downtown main took on a new search Saturday, as a component of an experiment aimed at revitalizing the area.
On weekends in between July 31 and Sept. 5, the town is closing the avenue to website traffic from Smithe Avenue to Helmken Avenue, and reworking it into a “promenade” complete with live new music, performances and general public art.

“This is a good prospect to … seriously display what Granville can grow to be, what it could be, if we can deliver some range to the road,” Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Affiliation president and CEO Nolan Marshall claimed.
Vancouver town council authorised the pedestrian promenade plane in June.
The initiative features a pair of stay tunes levels, two busker/street performer regions, community seating and art installations.
Saturday’s programming integrated a “mini ball” with vogue/ballroom performances on a catwalk down the center of the road.
Transit has been re-routed to Seymour and Howe streets on times when the promenade is in location.
Marshall reported the idea was to make good electricity and buzz on the road, producing Granville road an desirable vacation spot for almost everything from tourists to artwork studios to new workplaces.

Marshall is hoping the 2021 demo can act as a proof of thought, opening the doorway to possible summertime-prolonged road closures emulating successes in metropolitan areas like Montreal and London.
